~Culture Of The Clans~
Despite the fact that the Clans interact almost every day of their existence, and originated from the same place, they are actually very distant from each other. They prefer to keep their distance from each other, to keep from becoming too much like each other or interbreed among each other if they get too friendly, which is directly against StarClan's desires. While they did originate from the same people for the same reason, they have all but forgotten about this.
~WindClan - The First Clan~
Disposition
WindClan puts loyalty far higher than the other Clans do, and judge one's loyalty as one's worth in life. Unlike other Clans who give one or two strikes before taking drastic measures, WindClan will gladly exile someone the first time if they commit treason or break the Warrior's Code. Despite all of this, they are actually one of the kindest Clans out there, and are notorious for healing people from other Clans without batting an eye as to why they're injured or what Clan their from - they even are able to disregard whether or not their Clan is at war with the injured's. They hate fighting, and they would much rather run away than fight hand-to-hand combat. They are the fastest runners around, and can bolt from one end of the moorland to the other without breaking a sweat. Among new recruits from the Resort, it's rumored that they may have descended from Track Runners at their schools. These people tend to have a desire to explore and run as long and fast as possible.
Moral Compass
WindClanners see the world like they act in it: Everything must be done now, if it has to be done. If you need food, you get it now; if you need a friend, you look for one now; if you have a problem, you solve it now. While they understand things can be delayed for more important problems, they will understand if someone drops everything to get something done. The only thing they don't agree with is doing something rather than taking care of family: if you drop nursing a newborn to go and do something with a friend, then you'll definitely be shamed.
WindClan sees family as the closest thing to StarClan one can get. If you betray your family, you betray everything StarClan gifted you with. While it's not uncommon for people to sometimes go against their parents' wishes, that's not seen as 'betrayal;' if you refuse to care for a crippled sibling, or leave a cousin behind in a crisis, or don't defend a parent in battle, THAT'S betrayal.
Traditions
WindClan always has a feast on the morning of the Gathering Night. The night before, all the Warriors and appropriately-aged apprentices go out to hunt as much prey as possible. They bring it all back for the Clan, and eat as minimal as possible, saving it all for the feast in the morning. This is a time for socialization, lesson-learning, and advice-giving. This is also a common time when big announcements are made, such as pregnancies, couplings, or a decision.
They mark their borders every day in their own unique way; they use the unused parts of their prey and stake it into the ground. Stomachs, bladders, intestines, and skulls are all parts of the border decorations. Sometimes they'll also tie flowers, herbs, and pretty feathers/rocks to these as well, so it doesn't look too horrifically violent.
WindClanners see the arrival of a butterfly as a sign that a warrior of StarClan is present. Kids are encouraged to chase the butterflies, and Apprentices are told to always keep an eye on a butterfly; Warriors have a habit of dipping their head in greeting to any butterfly they see, to show respect to the warrior that took time out of its eternal rest to come and check up on them. The brighter the butterfly, the higher the rank - very bright, energetic butterflies are said to be Leaders.
WindClan also has a Clan-specific rank known as Tunnelers. They make use of Badger Setts, and dig between them, nearly hollowing out their moorland. No other Clan knows of this rank, and the tunnels are entirely secret to the other Clans. Some of their tunnels extend out all the way into the other Clans' territory, and one of them even emerges into the Otherlands; these tunnels are made after generations of repeated digging, and the longest tunnels took around 3 generations of tunnelers.
~SkyClan - The Sister Clan~
Disposition
SkyClan is very open-minded when it comes to New Recruits from the Resort. They are remarkably gentle toward Loners and people from the Resort, often inviting them refuge and food from their own Camp, and even inviting them to stay as long as they need to recover and get on their feet. However... their attitude toward Clans is far different. SkyClan is by far the most territorial of the Clans, and has been known to kill intruders on the spot if they don't run away fast enough. They have the most complex ambush tactics of all the Clans, usually using their tree-climbing skills to their advantage. This is the Clan that has the strongest upper body, since Kids are taught from the moment they can walk how to climb tall trees if they're in immediate danger. By the time they're adults, their arms are as buff as a wrestler's!
Moral Compass
SkyClanners see aggression in everything outside of them: everything except Loners and Newcomers are a threat to their way of life. They don't have any remorse for killing trespassers or the members of Clans they're at war with; They disregard the part of the Code that says "a warrior doesn't have to kill to win." In their eyes, if you didn't kill your opponent, you lost the fight.
SkyClan is a very tight-knit Clan, and are ever-confident that their leader will make the right choices at all times. Even if the other Clans know the leader is not good, SkyClan will never accept that view until after the leader is out of power, or if StarClan themselves tell them. They always follow the word of their leaders, no matter what. After the leader's gone, that's when they point out what they didn't like about them.
Traditions
SkyClan doesn't have 'naturally made unions' like the other Clans usually do; two people are declared boyfriend-and-girlfriend only if the Leader 'binds' them. It's a ceremony that the Leader brings forward, which unites two people as a couple for the rest of their lives. If the Leader doesn't approve of a couple, they cannot be bound together. Eloping is seen as incredibly awful and even a sin, and people who get together/have illegitimate children without asking the Leader are often executed for their crime.
SkyClan marks their border by long, threatening scratches along tree trunks. Sometimes they're just long, deep scratches (usually made by apprentices), or clouds etched into the bark to represent their Clan's name - SkyClan! They can also mark their border by putting their prized preything staked on the trees - squirrels.
SkyClan sees battle as incredibly sacred, and oftentimes will play-fight/spar together to keep StarClan pleased wit them. They encourage their children to play roughly with their siblings and other Kids, and as apprentices they train with the intention to draw a little blood - not murder, but just enough to make it sting. SkyClan believes one can only learn if they have pain to punish their failures.
~ShadowClan - The Secret Clan~
Disposition
ShadowClan definitely is the most quiet of the Clans. They don't like to talk if they don't feel they need to, and don't find other Clans' problems as very important. They really don't care what the other Clans do as long as it doesn't involve them - however, if you encroach on their territory, their less quiet side bursts out with great strength. Their anger is unmatched by other Clans, and they can slip in and out of shadows remarkably easily. However, if you don't move in on them, they'll leave you alone - much like the wild animals that surround them. While they aren't afraid of battle, they won't be very inclined to join allegiances if they aren't directly involved in the reasoning for it.
Moral Compass
ShadowClan's self-worth comes entirely from whether or not you can take care of yourself by yourself. They don't expect pregnant Queens and little Kids to exactly be able to fight off a mastiff, but they do expect older Apprentices and Warriors to be very tough and be able to hold their own if cornered/isolated. They have even abolished the Apprentices' Den altogether so their apprentices can be toughened on the outside before they are allowed back into any form of defensive den. However, they aren't entirely heartless, and know when to stop and give someone a break or a place to sleep that's safe.
While ShadowClan isn't as tightly-knit as the other Clans, they certainly know how to defend each other. However, if you interrupt someone's problems, or dump your problems on another person, it's seen as rude and your respect levels lower significantly. It's also extremely shameful to play favorites with friends that should be equal, or show favoritism for family over friends over strangers. Leaders are expected to act as if every Clan member is their own child, and Healers are seen as the 'other parent' of the Clan itself.
Traditions
ShadowClan's warrior-assessments aren't done by hunting and fighting tests like the other Clans are, but rather something slightly more brutal - they send all the worthy apprentices out to a single clearing just on the edges of ShadowClan territory, where they're expected to take care of themselves for a week. If they come back to ShadowClan's main camp for food/shelter/assistance, they will be considered too young to be a Warrior and brought back to heal their wounds and bring them back to health. For those that make it a full week, they are made Warriors.
Something very unique about ShadowClan is their close relationship with RiverClan. They trade with RiverClan almost every time they meet, and actively seek out their patrols to do so! This is because they need the ink from RiverClan's prized squids, which they keep safe in little jars made of mud. When they become Apprentices, they are painted over with a certain coloration: If they are male they are tattooed with long stripes, starting from a line down their spine and becoming catlike tabby marks on their sides, arms and legs, as well as a single stripe across their cheeks. If they are female, they are inked with spots like a cheetah, thicker on their back and thinning out toward their belly and lower arms/legs, as well as two spots just above their eyes and cougar-like streaks going from the corners of their eyes to the edges of their mouth. When they are made warriors; boys are given two more stripes on their face to accent the first, while girls are given individualizing spots on their faces and stripes on their lower arms/legs. Leaders have a star painted on their cheek and another one between their shoulderblades.
~RiverClan - The Lazy Clan~
Disposition
RiverClan is renowned for being the most relaxed, laidback Clan in the Territories. RiverClanners are known for being playful, silly, and extreme clowns whenever the time calls for it. They aren't picky when it comes to what they eat, which means they have free food all throughout the year; this also means they have much more time on their hands to think. RiverClanners are particularly artistic, making little necklaces out of pretty seashells, shiny stones, feathers, bones, etc. They are known as the only Clan that the other Clans trade with. The other four Clans would never trade with each other, even if their lives depended on it; RiverClan is the economic center of the Territories. For this reason they can be rather cocky; since the Clans are extremely afraid to fight them in case they lose their trading rights. However, RiverClan is kind enough to respect other Clans' borders unless they go to look for something from the other Clan. They never encroach to attack.
Moral Compass
RiverClanners are under the assumption that, if it helps the Clan, might as well do it. If their warriors break the Warrior Code, RiverClanners really don't mind it if it helps the Clan as a whole, or at least a substantial percentage of it. They really are very lax with their rules, and it's even expected that the Leader be somewhat lazy and relaxed about punishments/breaking the Warrior Code. Despite what the other Clans think, however, they DO deal out punishments if you go too far - killing someone, committing treason, going back on one's words; this is all stuff that they can punish someone for. Other than these drastic things, though, they really don't deal out too bad of a punishment.
Traditions
RiverClanners have a habit of blessing all the food they have before they eat, no matter how much or how little they have. It's because they have so many options that they are able to be so important to the other Clans, and keep itself safe: thus, StarClan must be thanked for this keystone in their culture! If someone doesn't bless their food (save for a Kid), they are shunned for a week to punish them for being disloyal to their way of life and to StarClan.
~ThunderClan - The Justice Clan~
Disposition
ThunderClanners are often regarded as the emotionally weakest Clan available for being birthed into. ThunderClan is known all around the Territories for taking in refugees without any reasoning for their past, their deeds, or their personality. ThunderClan has even taken on exiled people or runaway criminals, under the assumption that they had something better deeper inside. They often go out and look for problems to solve, which puts them directly at odds with ShadowClan's lifestyle. They will generally butt into problems they don't need to be involved in, and usually this only makes the problem worse - not that they're readily admitting that, and it's questioned if they're even aware of it.
An important note is that ThunderClan believes itself to be a "chosen one" out of all the Clans, and puts itself on a pedestal for this - believing StarClan tasked them with 'saving' the other Clans from their haplessness.
Moral Compass
ThunderClan believes that putting others first is the meaning of life. They don't care if they don't belong in a situation, and they don't care if the other Clans want them gone. If they hear of a problem through gossip/gatherings/spying, they're going in to help. If a ThunderClan Leader refuses to help out another Clan, they're seen as weaker than Leaders that have done so in the past. If they are kicked out of a situation, they'll simply dive right back in at another angle.
ThunderClan also disregards StarClan contacting the other Clans, especially via omens. They believe StarClan only sends THEM true omens, while false omens are given to the other Clans just to appease them and keep them from getting jealous. While this angers the other Clans, ThunderClan believes it's just because they "are afraid to admit their inferiority."
ThunderClan might be the closest-knit Clan ever, and also possibly the one with the most DNA diversty. Due to their past of bringing in strangers, loners, refugees, criminals, and New Recruits, they seem to have the most differences in terms of genetics out of all the Clans. This is also caused by their more relaxed approach to inter-Clan couplings and illegitimate children between borders, so they'll gladly accept HalfClan members with open arms - something the other Clans see as very, very weak indeed.
Traditions
ThunderClan will always send a prayer to StarClan every day, since they consider themselves the "chosen ones." They always ask StarClan for their ever-knowledgeable insight and advice, even if it's cryptic and unclear. They often put the Healer and Leader to sleep first, and the Deputy takes over until everyone else goes to bed. The entire Clan gets together under the starry night sky and pray silently for their own problems to be helped, and then for the entire Clan's problems. Then they all go to sleep and hope for a word from their ancestors.
ThunderClan also has a great celebration whenever someone is involved in a relationship and/or confirmed pregnant with their first child. They have a great hunting party and feast, regardless of tensions with other Clans. They often give the newly-coupled/mother-to-be a bunch of presents to decorate her new Nursery home with/their shared den with, often consisting of bedding and shiny/pretty things they found or made.
Despite the fact that the Clans interact almost every day of their existence, and originated from the same place, they are actually very distant from each other.
